1.       Can I be admitted to the Bioengineering graduate program if I do not have an undergraduate degree in Bioengineering?

Yes, applicants must meet the Graduate College and requirements and have taken the following coursework to be considered for admission to the program:

Biochemistry or upper level biology
Measurements of living systems
Physiology
Calculus I
Calculus II
Calculus III
Differential Equations
General Chemistry
General Biology
Physics with Calculus I
Physics with Calculus II

Four of the following six topics
Thermodynamics or physical chemistry
Fluid mechanics – bioengineering transport phenomena
Engineering mechanics
Electrical networks:  Circuits I
Signals and systems
Biomaterials

Applicants will be considered for admission if they need no more than two of the above courses.  They would be admitted with a deficiency and generally would need to complete the courses within the first semester.

2.       What are the minimum requirements for the Bioengineering graduate program?

      The minimum G.P.A. requirement is 3.0 (4.0 scale).  Students that are admitted to the graduate degree programs are generally in the top 10% of their class.  Admission for the graduate program in bioengineering is very competitive and enrollment is limited.

            The average GPA for the PhD entering class for fall 2008 is 3.65.

            There is no minimum on GRE and TOEFL scores. 

            Average GRE scores for the PhD entering class for fall 2008 are:
            Verbal - 539
            Quantative - 751
            Analytical - 4.45

            The average scores for the MS students entering fall 2008 are:
           
Verbal -  578
            Quantative - 720
            Analytical - 4.2

 

3.       What do I need to complete my application?

The application fee is:
      $65 for domestic applicants      
      $80 for international applicants

Applicants must complete the on-line application and submit materials requested by the Graduate College; this includes official transcripts, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, resume and official test scores.  The webpage for the application is:

5.       What is the deadline for my application materials?

Each department sets their own application deadline, the deadlines for Bioengineering are:

December 31 for admission for the fall semester

August 31 for admission for the spring semester

Your application may be evaluated if completed after the deadline but no guarantee of a decision.
 

6.       What is the minimum TOEFL score requirement for international students?

Students who do not have English as their primary language are required to achieve minimum competencies.  Please go to http://graduate.asu.edu/admissions/international.html#proficiency for additional information and minimum score requirements.

7.       When will I be notified of the decision of my application?

Once your application is complete at the Graduate College, they will forward the information to the department.  Applications are then reviewed by the department Graduate Committee, Associate Department Chair and Department Chair who make an admission recommendation to the Graduate College.   Applications that are complete by December 31 for fall admission are generally notified by April 15.  Applications that are complete by August 31 for spring admission are generally notified by November 30. 

8.       Can I defer my admission to a future semester?

Applicants can request to have their admission deferred once for one semester.  Admission for a future semester is not guaranteed as the application will be reviewed with all applications for that future semester.

9.       Do you admit for spring semester? 

Yes, we admit applicants for both fall and spring but spring enrollment is generally very limited.
