NSF Career Award will support bioengineering research on the body’s neural connections

Research aimed at understanding how the brain combines different forms of sensory information to help plan and modify our physical movements will be supported by a National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award recently won by Christopher Buneo, an assistant professor in the Harrington Department of Bioengineering in ASU’s Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. NSF Career Awards recognize scientists and engineers considered to be potential leaders in their fields. The award will provide about $609,000 over five years for Buneo’s... Read more »

New course examines questions arising with the nanotechnology boom

The science of the small is on the cusp of something big, says Professor Doug Sylvester, who’s offering a nanotechnology course that will be of interest to ASU students across many disciplines. Despite its name, Nanotechnology and the Law, the two-credit course is geared toward graduate students in public policy, bioengineering, biomedicine, justice studies and political science, as well as in law. The course, which also is open to all students in ASU’s Barrett, The Honors College, will be held from... Read more »

Engineering School collaborates on effort to cultivate bioscience leaders

To help meet the need of Arizona’s booming bioscience sector and create the next generation of highly skilled, interdisciplinary scientists, the Arizona Board of Regents recently approved an innovative ASU graduate degree in Biological Design. The Biological Design PhD degree program seeks to attract and train new scientific talent to use an outcome-driven, interdisciplinary approach in solving major global challenges in human health and the environment. The program is a collaboration between ASU’s Biodesign Institute, Ira A. Fulton School of... Read more »

ASU engineers, scientists set stage to expand sensor research

Imagine getting a phone call informing you that you are about to get sick even before you start to feel any symptoms of illness. The rapid development of sensor technology – including biosensor devices – is making such a scenario increasingly possible. As many as 150 ASU researchers are working with sensor technology. But many remain unaware of the sensor work their colleagues are involved in, says Mark Hayes, a chemistry and biochemistry professor in the College of Liberal... Read more »

Ties to global engineering community boosted by new ventures with Chinese universities

ASU’s global reach will be extended by collaborative ventures with two of China’s premier higher education and research institutions. Recently completed agreements establish an educational program in cooperation with Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and a research program that will pair the biomedical engineering college of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the Center for Neural Interface Design at ASU. Both projects are the result of efforts by Jiping He, a professor in the Harrington Department of Bioengineering... Read more »
